Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a low growing perennial herb in the mint family that is native to western Europe and the Mediterranean. Oregano is sometimes called wild marjoram, and is closely related to that herb.

While there are many cultivars of oregano, the one with the most culinary and cocktail use is Origanum vulgare hirtum, which is also known as Greek or Italian oregano. Oregano has a warm green-spicy note that has similarities to both basil and sage. It is one of a handful of herbs that retains a strong similarity to its fresh state when dried.

In the culinary world, oregano is a natural pair with grilled foods, especially lamb. It is a natural partner for [ingredient=gin gin] as well.
